Beacon

Beacon

Why do so many
Wish to be the dark
To hide in the darkness
To fear the shadow
To be the one unseen
So deep of feeling
Without wanting to feel
I like the darkness
For what it is
The quiet peace
The enveloping comfort
The deep sleep
Of eyes closed
And clouded moon
And starless nights
Of closed doors
And curtains drawn
But I would much rather
Be the light
The flickering candle flame
The twinkling star
The lighthouse beacon
The pinpoint of light
That strays out of the darkness
And draws eye
And heart
Toward home
The warmth of the fire
The serenity of the stars
The safety of being seen
For who you are

Shine brightly little one
For you are a light
In the dark
