Cliff-Diving

Cliff-Diving

I stand on a precipice
Staring down
At the still water below
The surface smooth as glass
Will it break if I fall?

Toes gripping ground
Legs shaking
Heart pounding in my mouth
I step closer
And closer to the edge

I am frozen in place
Feet glued to stone
Hands stiff at my sides
Breathing fast and quick
My skin cold

This is the moment of decision
Do I take that first step?
Go diving in?
Or is it better
To just play it safe?

I turn
Walk away from the ledge
Turn around again
And run
Leaping with both feet
